Frequently Asked Questions

In order to ensure that we are the right choice for you and your dog, please take a moment and read through our FAQ's before you book with us!

Booking & Payment Information

I am a new client, do i need to book a trial stay?
Yes! All new clients are required to book a minimum 24 hour trial stay prior to booking. This policy is for your dog's benefit, in order to make sure they are happy, healthy and safe to be boarded. While we welcome all dogs (even those with behavioural issues), a trial stay enables us to thoroughly assess your dog and provide updates and honest feedback about how they are doing. While we offer boarding, we are also professional dog trainers and it is through this lens that we structure all services here at Mayrich. If your dog is stressed out or isn't doing well, we will contact you and let you know. It may be that we aren't the right choice for your dog, or it may be that they need a little bit of work in training prior to their board to ensure their and our team's safety.
How do i make a reservation?
All bookings from current clients can be made through our online booking portal (you'll find the link on this page, or from our homepage). If you have not made an account, click on the ling and ensure all required fields have been filled out in order for the booking to be accepted. (You cannot enter your dog's vaccine information from the online booker, this will be filled out on our end.) Please note, we require dogs to be up-to-date on DA2PP, Rabies & Bordetella).
when do i pay?
Payment is due at the time of drop off and can be made via credit card, cash or e-transfer sent to mayrichkennels@gmail.com
Please note that we must have payment in full prior to your dog's pickup with no exceptions.
what payment methods do you accept?
We accept e-transfer, cash, credit card (visa & mastercard) and cheque. (Please note that cheques must be cleared prior to dropping off your dog.)
how are your rates calculated?
Our kennel operates just like a hotel and that's also how we calculate our rates! There is always a "daily" charge for the drop-off day regardless of time (am/pm drop off). For the pick-up day, there is no daily charge if you pickup your dog within our am check-out time, but ANY pickup after that is subject to a full daily charge...just like a hotel. Why do we do this? It's simple, if you've booked your dog in with us past our am check-out time, we have reserved the suite for your dog for the entire day and thus have not booked another dog into the suite. You DO have the option at booking to do a daycare day on your pickup day instead of boarding. This allows us to free up a suite, and also reduces the rate for your pickup day from a boarding charge to a daycare charge.
Dogs must be able to attend daycare in order to be elidgeable for this service.

what are your hours?
Monday-Friday:
Drop-Off: 8am-9:30am & 3:30pm-5:30pm
Pick-Up:
8am-9:30am & 3:30pm-5:30pm
Saturday:
Drop-Off: 8:30am-10:30am
Pick-Up: 8:30am-10:30am
Sundays:
Drop-Off: 9am-10:00am & 2:30pm-4pm
Pick-Up: 9am-10:00am & 2:30pm-4pm
We ask that you only book into our kennel if these hours work for you. These are our kennel hours and these are the only times that we schedule pickups and drop offs.
can i change my drop off/pick up time after booking?
You can make changes to your booking by requesting a change in the online booking portal. From there, we can confirm the change or contact you if there is anything on our end that would prevent the time change. Please just make sure that your changes are within our drop-off & pick-up hours.
Is there an additional fee if i don't drop off/pick up my dog during scheduled hours?
We have resisted this for all of the years we have been in business, as we do understand that there are emergency situations and we want to always be able to help our clients in these cases. Sadly, what's started to happen, is that the majority of dogs are being requested to be dropped off/picked up outside of our hours which has been very disruptive to the flow of our kennel. We are hoping that by adding more information to our FAQ's page, we can eliminate the need for this charge.
is there a cancellation fee?
Please check back as we will be adding an update here!
how far in advance do i need to book?
During regular times, it's a good idea to book a week in advance if possible. Bookings submitted over the weekend may not be processed until the following business day.
How far in advance do i need to book during holiday seasons?
We book up extremely fast over the holiday season. We recommend that you reserve at least 1-2 months prior.
What happens if i have delays or travel changes that prohibit me from picking up my dog during our scheduled date/time?
Please check back as we will be updating an answer here!
can i tour the kennel before i book my dog in?
While we would be delighted to meet with you prior to you boarding your dog, (this can be arranged by booking a trial stay or meet & greet), we do not offer kennel tours.
Why?
Offering tours is beneficial for the kennel owner and dog owner. Tours allow the kennel owner an opportunity to showcase their facility, and allows the dog owner to have an additional layer of comfort knowing where their pet will be sleeping. We think this would be a win all-round if it weren't for the fact that offering tours is extremely hard on the dogs that are staying in the kennel. There are many wonderful kennels that accommodate friendly happy-go-lucky dogs, (including ours), but our kennel is also one of the only boarding facilities to also accommodate dogs with serious behavioural issues. Many of our client's dogs have fear issues, aggression issues, reactivity issues, anxiety and/or major impulse control issues.
These dogs come to us for safe lodging and rehab and potentially the worst thing imaginable for dogs like this would be for them to be on display to strangers.  Consider your own dog's reaction every time a stranger knocks on the door to your home and/or someone comes over. Typically this results in an anxious or highly excitable response, running around, barking and would only be amplified in a boarding setting.
At Mayrich, our job is to put your dog first; always. This is the duty of all professional dog trainers, really, and when your dog is in our care, this is their home.

Everything about our kennel, from the design to the furnishings, to the way we interact with the dogs in our care has been created to foster a home-like environment and feel. We've made it our mission to steer away from traditional kennels which too often have a shelter, pound or jail feel about them; concrete floors, iron bars, chainlink.

In addition, our clients pay us to care for and protect their dogs while they are away, so to then disrespect those clients by allowing strangers coming through and observe their dogs, potentially get the dogs stressed out, just doesn't sit well with us. We wouldn't want this for our own dogs, so even if it means that we miss out on a potential client, we will stick to our conviction.

Mayrich Kennels is a licensed and registered kennel and as a result are subject to random inspections by animal control officers in which we must pass in order to renew our license each year. We have have not only passed every inspection, but exceeded our industry standards. We have always passed our inspections and consistently receive top reports from inspecting officers and have even had the following comments made directly to us during inspections:
"This is nicer than my house"
"This is the nicest kennel I have ever inspected"
"You are clearly a leader in the industry"
"This is the cleanest kennel I have ever inspected"
"I've never seen anything like this"
"I'm blown away"
"You should be inspecting us"
"I have no concerns"
"Can I live here?"
All of this said, we do understand if you still aren't comfortable with our no-tours policy, and we would be happy to provide you with names of tour-friendly facilities for you to research and see if they might be a better fit for you! The most important this is that you choose the right facility for YOU and your dog. If you're not comfortable leaving your dog without viewing their suites, then you shouldn't do it! There are many fabulous kennels that offer this service.

What To Bring

Do i need to bring my dog's food?
Yes! If your dog is on kibble, you must provide your own dog's food. This is for their health and wellbeing as changes to diet can cause upset tummies and diarrhea. If your dog is raw fed, raw food can be purchased from therawstore.ca and fed during their stay. You are also very welcome to bring along your dog's own raw food and we are happy to feed raw during their stay.
How should i pack my dog's food?
All food must be either:
1) Pre-portioned per meal in individual plastic food storage bags/containers
2) Portioned into Plastic food storage bags that we will then portion meals out of per-feeding
3) Portioned into sealable plastic bins that we can portion meals out of per-feeding

*Raw fed dogs: We have several full size freezers/fridges and are happy to feed raw to your dog during their stay. Please provide clear feeding instructions and only provide enough raw for your dog's stay.
Should i bring extra food & will extra food be returned?
NO! Please make sure that you only bring the amount of food required for your dog's stay. It is unfair to expect my team to carrying around 50lb bags of dog food day in and day out. These bags are also unsanitary because they are virtually impossible to keep sealed. At Mayrich Kennels, we pride ourselves in our meticulous cleaning and sanitization protocols and a major part of health and safety is proper food storage. We also simply don't have the space to store large bags of dog food. Excess food will NOT BE RETURNED, so please only pack what's needed for your dog's stay. In the event of an emergency that would require you to be delayed in your pickup, Mayrich Kennels Team would be happy to pickup additional feed for your dog so they would never go without, but we ask for your understanding and cooperation with this should you choose to board in our kennel.

Can i bring treats for my dog?
Absolutely!! However, please only bring an allotted amount of treats that you'd like us to use during your dog's stay. We LOVE to use treats and spoil your dog with treats during their stay, so we want to ensure that we are not over or under doing it. Only bring the treats that you want us to use as well as guidelines for frequency that we will be happy to follow during your dog's stay. You are also welcome to purchase from our wide selection of premium, single ingredient and organic treats that are available at Mayrich Kennels & therawstore.ca. Make sure to let us know if your dog has any allergies or sensitivities to treats, and please only pack treats that you know re safe for your dog and that won't cause tummy upset.
Can i provide my own frozen stuffed kongs?
Yes, however a charge of $3.95+hst is still applicable as we still have to store, administer and clean the kongs. If you have other treats that don't require stuffing, storing and cleaning then we are happy to administer them to your dog at no additional charge during their stay.
can i bring kongs and a jar of peanut butter and have you stuff & give to my dog during their stay?
Yes, however a charge of $4.95+hst is still applicable as we still have to store, stuff, administer and clean the kongs. If you have other treats that don't require stuffing, storing and cleaning then we are happy to administer them to your dog at no additional charge during their stay.
can i bring my dog's bed?
Yes. You are welcome to bring along your dog's bed as long as the bedding is machine washable. If the bedding is not washable, we will not use it and will instead use our own bedding. We provide a multitude of bedding options, including raised Kuranda beds, plush beds, and orthopaedic beds. If your dog is a chewer, make sure that you let us know this ahead of time! Mayrich Kennels is not responsible for lost or damaged bedding.
can i bring my dog's toys?
Absolutely but please remember that Mayrich Kennels is not responsible for lost or damaged toys. We are also happy to provide your dog with toys during their stay with us. **If your dog is a chewer/toy destroyer, make sure you let us know this ahead of time!
Can i bring my dog's food bowls?
No! Please leave your dog bowls at home, we will not use them. Mayrich Kennels uses food grade stainless steel bowls that allow proper sanitization. If your dog eats from a slow feeder, you are welcome to bring it and we are happy to use this for meals, however please ensure that it is clearly labelled. Mayrich Kennels is not responsible for lost or damaged items.
can i bring my dog's crate?
No. We have multiple sizes and styles of crates here if you would like your dog to be crated during their stay. We will not under any circumstances carry in crates or store crates.
can i bring my dog's blanket?
You are welcome to bring your dog's blanket(s) should you choose to do so. Please keep in mind that blankets must be able to fit in a washing machine and dryer. Mayrich Kennels is not responsible for damaged bedding or lost bedding. We also provide our own plush blankets are are happy to provide your dog with our bedding should you wish to use ours.
Can i bring one of my t-shirts so that my dog can sleep with it and have my scent for comfort?
Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, we ask that you do not bring personal worn clothing at this time. We appreciate your understanding.
Can i bring my dog's training equipment?
Absolutely! Please make sure to bring along all of the training equipment that you're currently using (prong collar, e-collar etc.) and we are happy to continue using the tools and maintaining your dog's training during their stay. Please label all of your dog's training equipment appropriately. (Mayrich Kennels is not responsible for lost or damaged equipment.)

Vaccinations & Health

Does my dog have to be up to date on vaccinations in order to board with you?
Yes. The health and safety of our boarding dogs is our number one priority. We are also a fully licensed and insured kennel and vaccinations requirements are mandated in both applications. As a result, we require all dogs to be up to date on the following vaccines:

8-16wks:
DA2PP & Bordetella
16wks+:
DA2PP, Bordetella & Rabies

Do you accept Titres in lieu of vaccines?
Yes!

Will you accept a veterinary note of exemption for elderly dogs (of which it may no longer be safe to receive vaccines, but who have maintained a regular vaccination schedule throughout development?)
Yes, provided we have a written and signed letter from a licensed veterinarian.

What vaccinations do you require?
8wks-16wks: DA2PP+Bordetella
16wks+ : DA2PP, Bordetella & Rabies
do you accept titre testing?
Yes!
does my dog have to be on flea/tick prevention?
It is recommended that your dog be on flea, tick & heart worm prevention (homeopathic or pharmaceutical prior to boarding.
what is kennel cough
Kennel cough is essentially a doggie cold or flu. You can check out an external AKC article on Kennel Cough by clicking here
is there a risk that my dog could get kennel cough if i board them?
Yes! Even if your dog gets their Bordetella vaccine, if they are in an environment where there are other dogs, they are susceptible to Kennel Cough. Even in our kennel, where we practice stringent cleaning protocols and are obsessive over sanitization, (we use antimicrobial turf potty yards, antimicrobial rubber flooring in each suite, veterinarian grade cleaner, air filtration & purifiers), we still get kennel cough 1-2 times a year. This happens when someone brings a dog in that isn't symptomatic, who then later goes onto become symptomatic. While we have a separate area if a dog does begin to present, it's usually to late due to the high transmissibility of the virus.
While most dogs recover without any issues, puppies, elderly dogs and immune compromised dogs are at greater risk if they are to contract the illness.
At Mayrich Kennels, we won't ever try to hide this if it is going around our kennel. Our policy is to immediately contact the owners of all the dogs in our care, letting them know. From there, we contact all of out clients who have upcoming bookings in case they'd wish to cancel their booking with us.
While there is likely no way to dodge kennel cough unless you keep your dog in total isolation, there are some things you can do to help!
  1. Don't bring your dog to daycare or boarding if they've been exposed to a dog that has kennel cough.
  2. Don't bring your dog to daycare or boarding if they are presenting any kennel cough symptoms. (coughing, reverse sneezing, sneezing, runny nose etc.)
  3. Avoid high risk areas such as dog parks, shows, events or play groups where dogs aren't required to be vaccinated. You want to avoid these areas several weeks prior to bringing them to boarding or daycare.
if my dog is sick, can i still bring them into the kennel to board?
No. By bringing a sick dog into the kennel, you are putting all of the other dogs at risk. While it can be very frustrating to have to change plans, we ask that you please consider the health and well being of the other dogs and the impact it can have on our small business. Many veterinarians also offer boarding to their clients and in the event that your dog is sick, we encourage you to take them to your vet and see if they can arrange boarding and care until your dog is better.
My dog is on medication, can they still board with you?
Yes, as long as they do not have a current communicable disease and have been symptom free minimally 14 days prior to their boarding stay.
All medications must be in their prescribed bottles with veterinary instructions clearly visible.
